James is assistant physician in the General Medicine Division, Clinical Epidemiology Unit, and Diabetes Research Unit, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Director of the MGH Clinical Research Program’s Disease Management Research Unit, as well as the Chair of the American Diabetes Association's Council on Epidemiology and Statistics.

Dr. Meigs received his bachelor's from Williams College and his MD from Harvard Medical School. After a Primary Care Internal Medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Meigs completed a General Medicine Fellowship at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital and received an MPH from the Harvard School of Public Health.

Dr. Meigs’ primary research interest is the etiology and prevention of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Epidemiologic research focuses on biochemical and genetic causes of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Health services research focuses on trials of medical informatics applications providing provider decision support and population registry management for type 2 diabetes care. He has authored more than 100 scientific articles and presented numerous papers and lectures nationally and internationally. He is an Associate Editor of Obesity Research, a member of several local and national diabetes care improvement advisory boards, and a manuscript reviewer for many scientific journals.
